How Many Hyperbaric Oxygen Sessions Do You Need?

If you are thinking about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), one of the first questions you will ask is how many sessions you actually need. It is a fair question, because HBOT is rarely a one-and-done treatment. The honest answer is that it depends on your goals, your health history and how consistently you can come in. This guide walks through the session ranges we use as a starting point at Cryo Body Works, what affects your protocol, and how to plan your visits to our studio at 3501 Hyridge Dr in Austin.

Why HBOT Usually Takes More Than One Session

During HBOT, you rest inside a pressurized chamber while breathing concentrated oxygen. Under pressure, more oxygen can dissolve directly into your blood plasma, which may help deliver oxygen to tissues that are harder to reach under normal conditions. You can read the full overview on our hyperbaric oxygen therapy page.

The key point for planning is that HBOT tends to work cumulatively. A single session can feel relaxing, and some people say they feel energized afterward, but the potential benefits people look for, such as support for recovery, inflammation and overall wellbeing, are generally associated with a series of sessions rather than one visit. Research on wellness uses of HBOT is still developing, so it is best to think of a protocol as something that may help support your body over time, not a guaranteed result.

Typical Session Ranges by Goal

Every protocol is individual, but these are the general ranges we share with clients on our HBOT page. Think of them as a starting point for a conversation, not a prescription.

  • Acute injury recovery: often around 5 to 10 sessions. This may apply if you are working through a recent strain, sprain or a hard training block and want short-term support.

  • Chronic concerns or longevity goals: often around 20 to 40 sessions. People with ongoing inflammation goals or those focused on healthy aging typically plan a longer series.

  • Maintenance: often 1 to 4 sessions per month once you have completed an initial series, to keep HBOT as part of your routine.

Across goals, most HBOT protocols land somewhere between 10 and 40 sessions. How quickly you move through them depends on frequency, which usually ranges from 1 to 5 sessions per week.

What Affects How Many Sessions You Need

Two people with the same goal may still end up on different plans. A few factors tend to shape the number of sessions:

  • Your goal: Short-term recovery support usually needs fewer sessions than a longer-term wellness or longevity plan.

  • Consistency: Because HBOT tends to build over time, regular sessions in a set window are usually more useful than scattered visits months apart.

  • Session length and pressure: Our sessions start at 60 or 90 minutes and are listed at up to 2.0 ATA (atmospheres absolute). The chamber type and pressure matter; our guide to mild vs. hard-shell hyperbaric chambers explains the difference.

  • Your health history: Certain lung conditions, ear problems, recent ear surgery and severe claustrophobia may affect whether HBOT is a good fit at all. We screen every client before treatment.

  • How you feel along the way: Your plan can be adjusted as you go. Some people extend a series, while others shift to maintenance sooner.

How Often Should You Do HBOT?

For most people, frequency is the biggest lever. Coming in 1 to 5 times per week is the typical range. Here is how that can look in practice:

  • A focused series: Several sessions per week for a few weeks, often used when someone wants to complete a 10 to 20 session block in a defined timeframe.

  • A steady routine: One or two sessions per week over a longer period, which may suit busy schedules or longer-term goals.

  • Maintenance: One to four sessions per month after an initial series.

No recovery time is needed after a session, so you can return to your normal activities right away. Many Austin clients schedule HBOT before or after work, or on rest days between workouts. Our hours are Monday to Friday 10 to 7, Saturday 10 to 5 and Sunday 11 to 4.

What a Session at Cryo Body Works Looks Like

Knowing what to expect makes it easier to stick with a series. At our Northwest Austin studio:

  • Before: Wear comfortable cotton clothing, skip lotions and perfumes, and leave electronics outside the chamber. You can eat normally. Your first session includes a consultation to review your health history and goals.

  • During: Sessions last 60 to 90 minutes, including pressurization and depressurization. You may feel fullness in your ears as pressure increases, similar to an airplane descent, and swallowing or yawning usually helps. Once at pressure, you can read, nap or simply relax.

  • After: Hydrate well. Some people feel energized and others feel deeply relaxed.

HBOT at our studio requires a prescription ($25). A free consultation is available by calling 512-522-0221, which is a good way to talk through a realistic session plan before you start.

Making a Multi-Session Plan Easier

Because HBOT is usually a series, it helps to plan ahead:

  • Book your first block in advance. Reserving several sessions at once makes consistency easier. You can book online through our scheduling page.

  • Look at membership pricing. Members get access to lower pricing on HBOT and other services, which can make a longer protocol more manageable. See our memberships for details.

  • Pair it with other services. Many clients combine HBOT with red light therapy, infrared sauna or NAD+ therapy as part of a broader recovery routine, on the same day or on alternating days.

  • Check in as you go. Tell our team how you are feeling so your plan can be adjusted.
